Playwright, Linda Lucas, is struggling to build a career in New York City. When a Hollywood producer buys the film rights to one of Linda's plays, she travels to Los Angeles to collaborate on the movie script. There she is teamed up with the producer's brother-in-law, Scott Richards. Scott lives at the beach and admits to having an aversion to work. At first, Linda is appalled by Scott's lack of ambition and irresponsible lifestyle, but soon his good looks and offbeat charm begin to win her over.

Working at the beach with Scott and his zany neighbors, The Crazy Cavanaugh's, turns into a fun-filled adventure. By the time the movie script is finished, Scott and Linda are falling love, but an important offer on another of Linda's plays sends her rushing back to New York. When Scott visits Linda in New York he finds that her former boyfriend, a handsome actor is romancing her again. Scott wants Linda to return to the beach, but Linda wants Scott to stay in New York and devises an elaborate scheme to keep him there. Can Scott and Linda merge their individual lifestyles and find happiness together?
